Teotihuacan hot air balloon ride: flight only, our lowest price

Very. Each balloon is flown by a commercial pilot certified by Mexico's AFAC (Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil), and traveler insurance is included on every flight. Safety always comes first, and the line is a number rather than a feeling: above 10 km/h (about 6 mph) of surface wind we do not fly. That wind is measured on the launch field before the envelope is inflated, and the final go or no-go is the pilot in command's that same dawn — not the office's the night before. If the weather won't allow a safe flight we move your date at no cost, as many times as the sky takes.

Not in the base ride — leaving transport out is exactly what keeps it at $2,100 MXN (about US$115). If you'd rather not drive, you can add round-trip transport from Mexico City at checkout for about $1,500 MXN per person (about US$82), or skip the planning entirely with our All Inclusive package ($3,700 MXN, about US$202). Either way, the launch point is in Teotihuacan, State of Mexico, about an hour from the city.

Plan on about 3 hours from the moment you arrive — that covers the pre-flight prep, watching the inflation, the flight itself and the toast on landing. Of that, you'll be airborne for roughly 45 to 60 minutes at sunrise. Balloons lift off around 6:00 AM year-round, so please arrive 30 minutes early. You'll be done in plenty of time to head back to the city.

For most travelers, it's the highlight of the trip. Floating above the Pyramid of the Sun and the Avenue of the Dead as the sun comes up is the single most photographed hour in Teotihuacan, and it's hard to overstate the feeling. Lift-off is at sunrise from a launch field right beside the archaeological zone of Teotihuacan, in the State of Mexico — roughly an hour's drive from Mexico City. From there you fly over the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon while first light pours across the valley below.

Most healthy adults, including older travelers, can fly with no issue at all. Kids are welcome from age 5, as long as they're tall enough to stand and see over the edge of the basket and are with an adult. Two rules are absolute and we cannot make exceptions: the minimum age is 5 years, and pregnant travelers cannot fly. If you have any other health concern, just message us before you book and we'll let you know.

Your $2,100 covers coffee at the launch field before you board, the sunrise balloon flight over the archaeological zone of Teotihuacan, an AFAC-certified English-speaking pilot at the controls, traveler insurance, a sparkling-wine toast once you land and a personalised flight certificate to take home. Your phone or camera is welcome in the basket. And if the weather won't allow a safe flight, we reschedule you at no cost. What it does not cover: breakfast, transport from Mexico City and the INAH admission ticket to the archaeological zone.

$2,100 MXN per person is approximately $115 USD. Paying by credit or debit card adds a 5% surcharge, so the card total is $2,205 MXN (about $120 USD); with PayPal or bank transfer there is no surcharge. We charge in Mexican pesos, so the exact amount on your statement depends on your card's exchange rate that day. Payment is online, in full, and there is nothing left to settle at the launch field.

Yes, a little. Credit and debit card payments carry a 5% surcharge over the listed figure, so the $2,100 MXN ride is charged as $2,205 MXN by card (about $120 USD). PayPal and bank transfer carry no surcharge and you pay exactly $2,100 MXN. Either way the charge is in Mexican pesos and there is nothing left to settle at the launch field. The same 5% rule applies to every tier we sell, from this $2,100 ride to the $3,750 private balloon.

At $2,100 MXN (about US$115) the basket is shared with up to 16 passengers and one AFAC-certified pilot. If you want the basket to yourselves, that is our private balloon flight from $3,750 MXN per person (about US$205), with a minimum of 2 passengers — the lowest possible total is $7,500 MXN (about US$410), not $3,750. Everything else is identical — the same launch field, the same sunrise, the same 45 to 60 minutes in the air.

Dress for the swing, not for the average. Teotihuacan sits at 2,300 m and first light runs 4 to 9 °C, while a few hours later you are in full sun with no shade; the gap between the mean low and the mean high is 10 to 15 °C in every month of the year. Closed shoes you have already broken in, long trousers and three layers on top you can peel off one at a time are the right call, plus a cap and sunscreen for afterwards. Gloves are worth carrying in December and January, and nothing loose or synthetic near the burner flame overhead.

Leave the city by 4:30 AM if you are driving yourself. The launch field is about 50 km northeast of Mexico City, roughly an hour on Highway 85D with a $72 MXN toll each way (about US$4), and check-in at the We Fly Teotihuacan reception is at 5:30 AM for a lift-off around 6:00 AM. Public transport cannot make it: the first bus to the pyramids leaves at 6:00 AM, when the balloons are already up. If you would rather not drive, add round-trip transport for about $1,500 MXN per person (about US$82) or take the All Inclusive package at $3,700 MXN (about US$202), which collects you in Mexico City at 4:30 AM.

You pay in full online to hold the seat, and nobody loses what they paid. If the weather makes it unsafe to fly, you reschedule free, as many times as the sky takes. If you cancel or simply cannot make it, we do not send the cash back, but your full payment stays on file as credit valid for 12 months. And if we are the ones who cancel for something that is not the weather, every peso goes back to the card or PayPal account you paid with. Those three outcomes — free reschedule, 12-month credit or refund — are the only ones there are, and none of them loses you the booking.
