The Traditional morning keeps you on the field about 4 hours, so dress for two climates in one outfit: it is 4 to 9 °C at the 5:30 AM check-in at 2,300 m of altitude, and full sun with no shade by the time the toast is poured. Closed shoes already broken in, long trousers, and three tops you can shed one at a time; a cap and sunscreen for the last hour. Gloves are worth it in December and January. The burner radiates heat over your head, so nothing loose or synthetic near the flame. Leave the heels and the loose scarf at the hotel: you climb into the basket over its side, and there is no shade on the field once the sun is up.

4:30 AM from the city if you drive yourself — the Traditional check-in is 5:30 AM and the welcome coffee is served while the crew inflates, so arriving at 5:50 costs you the calmest part of the morning. It is about 50 km northeast on Highway 85D, roughly an hour, $72 MXN in tolls each way (about US$4). Public transport cannot make it: the first bus to the pyramids leaves at 6:00 AM, when the balloons are already up. You pay in full online to hold the seat and nobody loses that money. Weather that makes flying unsafe means a free reschedule, as many times as the sky takes.
